You may have been advised by one of our vets that your pet may require long term medication. This medication could be required for the rest of your pets’ lifetime. For us to dispense the medication on an ongoing basis, they will require regular prescription checks with a veterinary surgeon.
These regular checks are to enable the veterinary surgeon to monitor your pets’ condition and overall health closely, alongside keeping an eye on any subtle changes that may occur. This allows us to keep your pet on the best treatment course and dose for their condition, keeping them happy and healthy for as long as possible. During these checks we will give your pet a full health check and may, depending on the condition and drug, recommend further procedures such as blood tests, to monitor their progress or response to treatment and to make sure the medication is not compromising the health of internal organs.
In addition to the benefits mentioned above, regular prescription checks are also a legal requirement set by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), whereby the veterinary surgeon can only prescribe treatment for pets they see frequently enough to know are well and are suited to their current treatment protocols.
Our practice policy is that your pet has a prescription check at least every three months whilst on long term medication. Please note that this time frame may be shorter or longer depending on your pets’ condition and medications involved. Our prescription checks are discounted from our usual consultation fees at just £20.
When we ask you to book a prescription check for your pet, please remember that we are doing so with their best interests and health in mind and we have a legal obligation to do so. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
