March Star Pet Charlie

Charlie, an almost 5-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, arrived at Bright Side Vets with a subtle stiffness in his back legs, a discomfort that would soon escalate into a courageous battle against cruciate disease.

It all started with a mild limp

Initially Charlie presented with a mild limp in his back left leg and soreness in his stifle (knee). Charlie underwent diagnostic assessments, including X-rays, revealing the presence of cruciate disease in his left leg.

Charlie’s devoted owner made the decision to pursue surgical treatment, guided by our skilled orthopaedic veterinarian Kelly.

Corrective surgery

Charlie underwent a closing wedge osteotomy, a surgical procedure aimed at adjusting the surface of the knee joint, to improve stability.

Following the successful surgery, Charlie embarked on a comprehensive rehabilitation journey under the attentive care of Head Nurse Emma. Tailored exercises and diligent rehabilitation efforts gradually restored mobility and strength to Charlie’s leg. In addition to his rehabilitation plan, Charlie also received laser treatment from Helen.

This further accelerated his healing process and helped to alleviate any discomfort. The combined efforts of our dedicated veterinary team and Charlie’s resilient spirit laid the foundation for a promising recovery.

Six weeks post-operation, Charlie’s follow-up X-rays brought forth encouraging news – the bone was healing well, signaling a significant milestone in Charlie’s journey towards recovery. However, fate had yet another trial in store for our brave companion.

Lameness strikes again

A month later, Charlie’s unwavering spirit was once again tested as he experienced lameness in his other leg. Xrays  revealed the rupture of yet another cruciate ligament.  Undeterred by the setback, Vet Kelly swiftly performed another closing wedge osteotomy in his other leg, initiating another chapter in Charlie’s remarkable journey of resilience.

Despite a minor complication necessitating a second revision surgery, Charlie’s determination remained unyielding. Through the unwavering support of his devoted owner and the compassionate care provided by our veterinary team, Charlie emerged victorious once again.

To aid Charlie with his recovery, Vet Kelly also supplemented his treatment with acupuncture.

Acupuncture is a treatment derived from ancient Chinese medicine whereby fine needles are inserted at certain points in the body to stimulate nerves under the skin and muscle. This results in the release of pain-relieving endorphins that have beneficial effects on inflammation and painful conditions. We have find this to be a valuable complimentary therapy to support us managing patients with conditions such as cruciate disease.

Today, as Charlie continues his recovery journey, he serves as a beacon of inspiration and hope.

Over the course of the past nine months, Charlie and his devoted owner have become cherished members of our Bright Side family, brightening our days with their presence and leaving an indelible mark on our hearts. As Charlie continues to undergo laser therapy, rehabilitation and pain management, we remain committed to ensuring his continued well-being and comfort.
